Using Simtext
Simtext has been designed to work very much like normal SMS. The best way to become familiar with it is just to try sending and receiving messages. The details below will help you if you get stuck.
This chapter contains the following:
Composing and sending messages
To compose a message, open Simtext and select 'New Message' by either
pressing the centre of the scroll key, or by selecting with the pointer.
You will then be taken to the ‘New message’ screen, where
you can type the contents of your message either using the soft keyboard
or by writing on the screen with the pointer. Once you have composed the
message that you wish to send, select Simtext on the menu bar and choose
'Send'.
You will then be taken to the ‘Phone number’ screen, where
you can manually enter the number of the message recipient or select from
your contacts by pressing 'Simtext' on the main menu. You can add another
recipient by choosing Simtext on the menu bar and then 'add recipient'.
This step can be repeated as many times as you like until all the recipients
you want to send the message to are listed. Once you have entered the
numbers of all the people who you wish to receive the message, select
Simtext on the menu bar and then 'Send'.
Message personalisation
Unlike traditional SMS messages, Simtext messages can be customised by:
1. Setting the message colour
2. Inserting graphics
Setting the message colour: To change the
colour of a Simtext message that you’re composing, select Options
> Colour-text, when you are on the ‘New message’ screen. You
will then be presented with two options:
Text
Background
To change the colour of the message text or background select 'Simtext'
> Colour Text, then choose the the colour that you wish the message to
be changed to, then select back to return to the message.
To preview the colour changes select Simtext > Preview, whilst on the
‘New message’ screen.
Inserting Graphics: Graphics can be inserted
into Simtext messages when the message is being composed, by selecting
Simtext > Insert emoticon, whilst on the ‘New message’ screen.
To preview the changes select Simtext > Preview, whilst on the ‘New
message’ screen.
Collecting your messages
Unlike traditional SMS messages that are 'pushed' to your
phone, Simtext messages are collected at a time that is convenient to
you.
To collect your Simtext messages simply go to Inbox > Check messages.
Using your Simtext phonebook
The Simtext phonebook works in the same way as your normal phonebook.
However, your Simtext phone book is stored on the Simtext Server, which
means that you can update your contacts online and should you ever lose
your phone you won't lose your contacts.
To add a contact to your Simtext Phonebook, select ‘Contacts’
on the Simtext main menu. Then select Simtext > Add contact. You will
then be taken to the ‘Contact name’ page. Here you should
enter the name of your friend, then select Simtext > OK. You will then
need to enter the number of your friend into the ‘Contact number’
page, and once you have done so, select Simtext > OK.
Once you have entered the number of you friend you will be taken back to the
'Contacts' folder. As you will see the contact that you have
just entered will have a red dot next to them. The next time that you
send or receive a message, this red dot will either remain the same, which
means that this contact doesn't have Simtext installed on their
mobile, or it will change to a green dot, which means that they are a
Simtext user. If your friend has a green dot next to their contact name,
you can begin to send them Simtext messages straight away. If they have
a red dot send them a Simtext and we'll invite them to join. Give them
a call to help them set up Simtext and you'll be able to send messages
to each other in minutes.
Using Multi Mode
Multi mode is a unique way of reducing the amount that you are charged
for sending messages. This works by reducing the amount of data that you
transfer from your phone over GPRS. To use multi mode, all you need to
do is compose and store several messages on your phone, and then send
them all at once.
To use Multi Mode, compose a message and set its recipient(s) as normal.
You will then need to mark the message as a Multi Mode item. To do this
go the 'Recipients' page and select Simtext
> Multi Mode.
The message will then be moved to the Unsent Items folder, and you will
be taken to the Simtext main menu. If you then open the Unsent Items folder,
you will notice that the message has an envelope icon with a small 'M'
graphic next to it, which indicates that the message is a Multi Mode item.
You can mark as many messages as 'Multi Mode items' as you
wish.
Once you have composed two or more individual messages and marked them
as Multi Mode items in the Unsent Items folder, they can all be sent at
once. To send the Multi Mode items, open the Unsent Items folder and select
Simtext > Send Multi
messages.
You can additionally set any message that exists within the Unsent Items
folder to be a Multi Mode item. This is achieved by first scrolling to
the message, and then selecting Simtext
> Mark Multi Mode.
If a selection of messages in your Unsent Items folder are marked Multi
Mode, and you close Simtext, these items will be set back to normal unsent
items. However, if this happens you can simply re-mark these messages
as Multi Mode items in the way described above.
Using Distribution lists
A distribution list enables you to send the same message to a large group
of your friends at the same time, without entering each of the contacts
manually. Simtext distribution lists will also reduce the amount of data
that you transfer from your mobile, and therefore keep the amount you
are charged for sending messages to a minimum. This is achieved by creating
a list such as ‘Soccer Team’, then entering your friends numbers
into the list that belong to the team.
To create a distribution list, open Distribution List on the Simtext
main menu. Then select Simtext > Add list. You will then be taken to
a screen titled ‘Create list’, where you need to enter the
list name. Once you have done so, select Simtext > OK.
You will then be taken back to the ‘Distribution list’ folder,
where you will see the distribution list that you have just created. To
enter a number of your friend into the list, first select Simtext >
View list, then select Simtext > Add contact. You will then be taken
to the contacts folder where you can select a friend that you want to
include. To select a friend use the pointer or scroll to their name and
select Simtext > OK. You will then be taken back to the distribution
list where you will see the contact that you have just entered. You can
repeat this process until all the contacts you want are included in the
list.
To be able to enter numbers into a distribution list you must first enter
them into your contacts folder (Simtext Phonebook).
To send a message to the distribution list, first compose a message and
select Send. Whilst on the ‘Phone number’ screen select Simtext
> Distribution list, and you will be taken to the distribution list
folder, where you can choose the relevant list by selecting Simtext >
Add. You will then be taken to the ’Recipients’ screen, where
the distribution list will be included. You can add as many distribution
lists as you like, and even send to multiple lists at the same time.
Using My folders
My folders allow you to create folders that can store messages from certain
contacts or a group of friends e.g. Soccer team. This means that you can
find messages easily, without having to go through your entire Inbox.
To create a folder, open ‘My folders’ on the Simtext main
menu, then select Simtext > Create folder. You will then be taken to the
‘Create folder’ screen, where you need to enter the name of
the folder. Once you have done so select Simtext > OK.
Now that a folder has been created, you can move any messages that are
in your Inbox into the new folder. To do this open the Inbox on the Simtext
main menu, scroll to any messages that you wish to move using the scroll
wheel then select Simtext > Move to folder. You will then be taken to
‘My folders’, where you can select the destination folder.
To confirm this is where you want the message to be moved to, select Simtext
> OK. You will then be taken back to the Inbox.
Folders are optional.
